How it works

How to run a creator affiliate program without a spreadsheet at the centre of it.

A working playbook DTC teams use to design and operate a creator affiliate program — from the commission structure, to the tracking mechanism, to the payout process — and the software decisions that make each stage stick.

01

Decide what your creator affiliate program actually rewards

Before shopping for tooling, pin down the commercial model. Are you paying on every order, only on new customers, only on full-price SKUs? The answer decides which creator affiliate software is a fit — most tools handle a flat rate; far fewer handle rules that reflect how DTC brands actually think about margin.

  • Flat commission — simplest, easiest to communicate to creators.
  • Tiered commission — higher rates for new customers or larger baskets.
  • Product-specific bounties — for launches, overstock, or hero SKUs.
  • Hybrid — small flat fee plus performance commission for larger creators.

02

Pick a link mechanism creators will actually use

The mechanism you give creators — a link, a code, or a storefront — decides both how they post and how cleanly you can attribute orders. Coupon codes are easy but leak across audiences. Personal storefronts attribute cleanly but need a tool that can provision and manage them at scale.

  • Personal storefronts — cleanest attribution, easiest for short-form video.
  • Unique tracking links — flexible, but require first-party tracking to survive iOS.
  • Personal discount codes — familiar to creators, prone to leakage in group chats.
  • In-app checkouts (TikTok Shop, Instagram) — critical for creators who never send traffic off-platform.

03

Make attribution match the way creators actually post

Creators post short-form video, stories that expire, and lives that never get a click. Your creator commission tracking has to survive all of that — server-side events, first-party pixels, in-app checkouts, and a nightly reconciliation to Shopify. Last-click UTMs alone will quietly under-count creator-driven revenue by half.

  • Server-side, first-party tracking per creator storefront and link.
  • In-platform order capture for TikTok Shop and Instagram checkout.
  • Nightly reconciliation against Shopify for refunds and cancellations.
  • Post-level attribution so you can tell which video sold which SKU.

04

Automate payouts before you promise them

Nothing damages a creator relationship faster than a late or wrong payout. Before you invite a hundred creators, confirm the software can calculate commissions on net revenue, net refunds after they land, attach tax forms, and pay out on a schedule — including internationally — without your finance team touching a spreadsheet.

  • Automated commission calculation on net orders, not gross.
  • Refund and chargeback claw-backs applied on the next cycle.
  • Tax paperwork (W-9 / W-8BEN) collected and stored per creator.
  • International payouts in the creator's local currency where possible.
